Work-Life Balance: This discussion focused on balancing the demands of medicine with life’s greater responsibilities. Unlike the catchphrase “work-life balance,” the reality in healthcare is far more complex. Judaism and Torah values emphasize rest, peace, harmony, and the sacred importance of self-care. Medical professionals bear the profound duty to comfort, heal, and guide patients during moments of greatest vulnerability. This noble calling, however, often brings emotional and physical strain, threatening personal relationships and inner peace.
Rabbi Lerman drew from the Baal Shem Tov and sources alike to remind us: our essence is not the physical body, but the soul revealed through love, care, and connection. Through stories and metaphors, he illustrated that human beings are more than logic and flesh. We are divine souls with a higher purpose: to bring light, love, and harmony into the world.

Discussion Highlights
The JMPN Event on Medical Ethics: Presented by Rabbi Yossi Lerman of the Chabad Enrichment Center of Gwinnett, this session explored the age-old tension—and harmony—between science and religion, particularly when life and death are at stake. Judaism, with its rich tradition, offers profound guidance on medical ethics: alternative treatments, end-of-life decisions, and the sanctity of the body. Rabbi Lerman demonstrated how Jewish thought balances two essential values—preserving life and alleviating suffering. Some questions we explored:
We also noted Judaism’s contributions to medicine, symbolized by the “Caduceus” and the “Rod of Asclepius. After all, Rambam (Maimonides) himself was both a Rabbi and a Physician.
Fascinating discussion!
